Leaving South Dakota

It’s a gray morning in Pierre. Everyone scrambles this morning. Governor’s Inn offers free continental breakfast that includes making your own Belgian waffle. It’s our last day in South Dakota. Tonight, we will be sleeping in our own beds.

What a whirlwind of activity. Today we are headed one last time to help at the Takini Summer School program. We all look forward to seeing our friends one last time and hope that we see even more familiar faces at the after-school Kids Kamp and community dinner at Red Scaffold.

Sunday at Red Scaffold

At 9:00a.m. we are checked out of the Super 8 and headed for breakfast at a real restaurant, the Outrider Café. It will be the first time we gather together, all 14, at the same time and descend on a restaurant.

One of our new friends, a child named Madison, seemed intrigued by the computer. When she asked what I was doing, I told her that I was writing a story about my time in Eagle Butte that I would be sending to my friends back home.

Friday at Eagle Butte

I can’t believe it’s already Friday. Today we did a quick huddle in the Super 8 lobby at 8:15 before heading to the Cokata Wiconi (Cho-Kata Wi-Shoni). The teen center’s lobby is the location of this morning’s rummage sale.

Thursday, day one of our ministry, finds our five families (the Stark-Corns, Hensley, Hoffmans, Lockharts, O’Connors, and Ziegenhorns) moving from where breakfast was held in the Super 8 lobby to the more private conference room. We discuss the upcoming day’s event and close with our devotional before heading out.

Wow, can you believe it! Wednesday, our travel day, is finally here. We’ve planned, packed, and prayed. At least I did that we haven’t left anything behind that we might want in the eight days we’ll be away from home and on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. But more so, I offer a prayer to better hear the Creator’s voice guiding us during this time that we will spend with the Lakota Sioux in Eagle Butte, Red Scaffold, and Bridger.
